Flashback Friday: CLARK Cortez23 September 2016
It's FLASHBACK FRIDAY! - On April 11, 1970, the Apollo 13 crew of James Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise prepared to board the vehicle which will transport them to the Kennedy Space Center launch pad. Three days after the launch, these same men narrowly escaped death when an oxygen tank on the main module exploded nearly stranding them in space on their way to a planned moon landing. Amazingly, they were all returned safely to earth by a combination of ingenuity and grit from the entire Apollo team. The CLARK connection? Interestingly, their transport vehicle is a Cortez, a versatile Class-A motor coach built by CLARK from 1963 to 1970. This Cortez is still on display today at the Space Center’s Visitor Complex.
